VARENNA
Look to the other side of the lake from the hostel windows and you will see…Varenna!
Easy to reach by ferry, it offers the typical charm of an old northern Italian village : rocky, windy roads, restaurants, bars and shops.
The lovers’ lane, Villa Monastero and the Castle of Vezio with its falconery are Varenna’s main points of interest.
Enjoy the slow pace of this picturesque village and don’t miss the view from the Castle of Vezio!
Combine it with a trip to Bellagio or Bellano to make the most out of your day!
CYCLING
CYCLE PATH VALTELLINA AND NATURE RESERVE PIANI DI SPAGNA
Crowned by the Alps and crossed by bicycle routes, Valtellina and Val Chiavenna are ideal spots to discover local handicraft products, food and wines!
You will be able to taste local dishes in the “crotti” – traditional, natural cold houses now transformed into restaurants –, and to visit the nature reserve Pian di Spagna.
The cycling route of 16.5 km (one way) is perfect for a lengthy trip which includes tradition, food and scenic landscapes!

LAGO DARENGO AND CAPANNA COMO
One of the most inspiring hikes around Lake Como.
An alpine lake with clear waters lying between granite massifs and jagged peaks. A wild valley with waterfalls and wonderful forests.
Lake Darengo is located at the top of the homonymous valley, at the foot of Pizzo della Gratella (2230 m), Pizzo Campanile (2458 m), Sasso Bodengo (2410 m) and Pizzo San Pio (2304 m)
You can also sleep at Capanna Como contacting before the owner.
Consider around 4 hours walking from Livo (to be reached by C18 bus from Dongo) to reach the Lake and the Capanna.
A bit hard but at the end the magic atmosphere and the evocative charm of the landscape will make you forget the effort and the length of the ascent.

COMACINA ISLAND
The only Island on Lake Como! It is considered one of the most interesting archaeological sites of the early middle ages in northern Italy. Don’t miss the beautiful church with its famous gothic tower!
The close-by museums and archeological park may be an option for cloudy days and for those who are interested in history. If you are here on June 24, don’t miss the Festival of San Giovanni and its amazing fireworks!
A fairy spot with no inhabitants, a long unique history and prized for its nature and breathtaking views!

VAL SENAGRA
Just above Menaggio lies the splendid Senagra Valley park; it features a great hiking trail that leads to scenic waterfalls.
Sitting between Italian and Swiss Alpine lakes, the Park is home to varied wildlife, natural beauty, and the remains of traditional, rural life such as an ancient bridge and a mill that are definitely worth seeing!
Great for a day of nature and for those who enjoy a hands-on experience of history through the remains of the antique settlements!

RIFUGIO MENAGGIO AND MONTE GRONA
The hike to Rifugio Menaggio starts in Breglia (30 minutes from Menaggio by car or bus) and is of medium length and difficulty. It offers the opportunity to have a drink or a tradional dish at the hut.
If you continue 15 minutes more (to Pizzo Coppa) or make it all the way to the top of Monte Grona (three different routes from the Rifugio), you will never forget the great views on Lake Como, Lake Piano and Lake Lugano.
Bring good hiking boots, the routes gets steeper after the Rifugio… naturally rocky roads ahead!

MUST SEE
VILLA DEL BALBIANELLO
Located in Lenno, this elegant, romantic 18th century mansion and its magnificent garden have hosted writers, scholars and travelers, including Count Guido Monzino, the last owner of the Villa.
Lying on a wooded promontory, the villa offers an enchanted 360° view of Lake Como.
Number of movies have been shot at the Villa del Balbianello including Star Wars – Attack of the Clones (2002) and James Bond – Casino Royale (2006).
Enjoy one of the best views of Lake Como, learn about Guido Monzino’s fascinating life and…feel like a movie star!
Opening Time: every day, except Monday and Wednesday (unless public holidays) from 10 am to 6 pm.

COMO, CERNOBBIO, BRUNATE AND VOLTA LIGHTHOUSE
Surrounded by medieval city walls, the historic center of Como has the charm both of a modern city and of an an antique village. Inside the walls you will find shops, flea and antique markets (on certain days), restaurants and classic italian architecture.
Close to Como, on the left bank of the Lake, you can also reach Cernobbio, a famous and renowned tourist centre where Villa Erba and Villa d’Este are located.
On the Lake’s right bank, you can take the funicular to Brunate, to enjoy stunning views (and take stunning photos) and visit the impressive Volta lighthouse towering over the city.
The largest city located on the lake, easy to reach from Menaggio and perfect also for those who enjoy a little bit of shopping!

CROCETTA AND THE CAPPELLA DEGLI ALPINI
Located on top of a hill right above Menaggio, the Crocetta is a panoramic view point where you can enjoy a lovely view of the central lake area. In the surrounding woods you will also come across real trenches of the 1st World War!
It is a 40 minutes walk from the starting point, which can be reached by bus from the hostel.
Simple walk for inexperienced hikers who want to enjoy a breathtaking view over the lake and Menaggio!

CYCLING MUSEUM – OUR LADY OF GHISALLO
This hill, with its beautiful panoramic views, is well-known and popular place for cyclists. The climb is part of some of the most famous competitions in the history of cycling and hosts the Sanctuary of our Lady of Ghisallo, patroness of cyclists, a Monument to the cyclist as well as the Cycling museum.
A must see for everybody interested in cycling and the sportive history of the area!

CYCLE/FOOT PATH MENAGGIO-PORLEZZA (LAKE LUGANO) THROUGH LAKE PIANO
Starting right from the hostel, this path follows the traces of the former railway line (1884-1939) between Menaggio and Porlezza, connecting Lake Como with Lake Lugano. It also crosses the nature reserve of Lake Piano, a must see in the area!
The trail itself is easy to hike or bike with medium physical effort and a length of 13.5 km.
A great trip for those who want to experience nature and the outdoors off the beaten track and include some physical commitment!

THE ABBEY OF PIONA IN COLICO
Located near Colico, in the upper Lake, this abbey stands on a stunning location at the feet of Mount Legnone, on a hill surrounded by the Lake. Visit the local Church, the Cloister, the Capitulate Room and learn about products made by the Piona monks: medicinal herbs, cosmetic creams, honey and the famous liquors skillfully distilled according to antique traditions.
This trip is recommended for those who are looking for peaceful spots and want to learn about local traditions while viewing the picturesque landscape!

CYCLING PATH MENAGGIO – SORICO
This biking trail has a length of 25 km (mostly flat) and combines culture, nature and physical activity!
The route winds along the Lake shore, where you can see a succession of rocky inclines, valleys and villages of historical and artistic interest such as Rezzonico and Dongo. Additionally, you will also cross Domaso, a paradise for wind-sports.

LUGANO
If you decide to visit Lugano, which is located across the border in Switzerland, you will be able to visit public parcs, museums and shops, as well as to stroll along the lakeside.
Highlights are the Kursaal Casino, the museum of Alpine chocolate, but also the Olive trail winding along the shores oft he Lake, Monte Lema to enjoy breathtaking views of Lugano and the gold mine of Sessa to explore the mining history oft he area.
Enjoy a tidy and typical Swiss city with its watches, banks, and chocolate, and a beautiful lakefront.
MUST SEE
BELLAGIO
Bellagio has unique shops that sell fine art, silks, and special handmade crafts.
Visit Punta Spartivento, the northernmost point of the peninsula, from where you can also see the Alps, and/or visit Villla Serbelloni and Villa Giulia.
The old fishing village of Pescallo is 15 minutes walk from the ferry dock. Bellagio is one village to definitely tick off the list!
Combine it with a trip to Varenna to make the most out of your day!

THE GREENWAY OF THE LAKE
This pleasant 10km walk, starting from Griante (the village before Menaggio Southwards) follows the path of the old Via Regina. Along the Green Way, one will see unique examples of architecture, villas, and gardens as well as lakeside towns such as Griante, Tremezzo, Ossuccio, Lenno, and more.
A perfect opportunity to discover the architecture and the dreamy landscapes of the Middle Lake and a great way to reach by foot some famous sites of the area!

BELLANO: GORGES AND WAYFARER’S TRAIL
Located just a few kilometers from Varenna, Bellano is another stunning lakeside village; its main attraction is the “Orrido”, a natural gorge, formed by the erosion of the river Pioverna, a must see while there!
A market also takes place in Bellano every Thursday morning.
Bellano and Varenna can both be visited in one day by following the so-called Wayfarer’s trail, a hike of about 3h30 connecting Bellano to the Castle of Vezio in Varenna.
A beautiful village to walk around where you can enjoy great views of Lake Como!

MENAGGIO
The heart of the old town is around Piazza Garibaldi, where you can find a great selection of bars, restaurants and shops. Visit the churches of Santo Stefano and Santa Marta and the old neighbourhood of Castello.
On a sunny day, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Lake by sitting around the harbour or going to the Lido to swim and sunbathe. Great discounts available for hostel guests!

BERNINA EXPRESS
The world heritage Bernina Express red train is a one in a lifetime experience; crossing over the Alps without a tunnel and with the highest point at 2.300 meters, passing valleys, glaciers, waterfalls and famous Lago Bianco (the white lake).
Starting point is Tirano (2 hours journey by bus and train from Menaggio).
Enjoy a spectacular panoramic journey on the Alps!

VILLA CARLOTTA AND THE BOTANICAL GARDEN
70.000 square meters of garden and arts.
Located in Tremezzo and built in 1690, Villa Carlotta is one of the most fascinating Villa of Lake Como.
Its botanical garden is a masterpiece with its 8 hectares of flowers, plants (including tropical and exotic ones) and waterfalls.
Reach the Villa walking the “Green Way of the Lake” and visit it in spring time!

MOTO GUZZI MUSEUM
The museum showcases the Moto Guzzi history and culture, bringing together a rich collection of over 150 exhibition pieces of production motorcycles, sport bikes, prototypes and experimental engines.
The Moto Guzzi Museum is located in Mandello del Lario (from Menaggio: ferry to Varenna, then train to Mandello), the original birth place of the Moto Guzzi Eagle which was established in 1921.
A must-see for bikers and passionate of vintage motorcycles!
Museum and Book Shop opening time: Free entrance, Monday to Friday from 3 pm to 4 pm | In July: from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

SAN MARTINO CHURCH
This short hike (~40min one way) starts in Griante, the town just after Menaggio Southwards. On the way up to the church, there are beautiful views of Griante and Bellagio to be seen.
Passing behind the church and through a gate, you can get a close up view of the Lake from the cliffs (but watch your footing!).
Once back down, stop at beach bar on the other side of the road for a drink, a snack and a relaxing swim.
An easy hike to a 16th century church overlooking the Middle Lake!
